Wharekauhau Country Estate, Wairarapa
A Luxury Lodge of New Zealand with an enviable location, excellent food and a range of activities.
You’ll find this world-leading lodge 90 minutes’ drive outside of Wellington, on a 3200-acre working sheep farm by the coast. It has all the classy features that you’d expect from a Relais & Châteaux member, from elegant Edwardian interiors to croquet, and great facilities which include a spa, small gym, indoor pool and games room. But the experiences here are rightly geared towards the dramatic surroundings; lace up your hiking boots, sample sumptuous Pinot Noir in local wineries, go mountain biking and take a 4x4 vehicle tour of the working sheep station. The food is a big part of the experience here. The farm incorporates on-site ingredients into your meals, including fruit from the orchard, produce from the herb and vegetable gardens, fresh eggs courtesy of the estate’s 25 chickens and Manuka honey. You can enjoy pre-dinner drinks & canapés, as well as a five-course tasting menu for lunch on selected days. Recharge in one of the 16 swish cottage suites – each has underfloor heating and an open gas fireplace, and includes full country breakfast plus a four-course dinner in the evening. Or you can splash out on the luxurious three-bedroom Wharepapa Cottage where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have stayed, which is a short two-and-a-half-mile drive from the main lodge. Wherever you stay, you’ll have amazing hilltop views over Palliser Bay.

Weta Workshop Tour
Step behind the scenes at Wētā Workshop’s creative home base and get a close-up look at how things are made. This isn’t about green screens and computers. It’s about sculpting, moulding, painting and problem-solving, the hands-on craft that turns ideas into objects actors can interact with. Your guide walks you through the workshop’s story, from its early beginnings to the award-winning operation it is today, explaining how different departments work together to create props, costumes and creatures. Along the way, you’ll see and handle pieces from across the workshop, including weapons, armour, prosthetics and detailed models, with the stories behind how they were made. • Start time: 9am • Duration: 1½ hours • Daily departures • Operates year round • Group experience

Martinborough Wine Tour
Continue on to a further 2 or 3 wineries or head to the lovingly restored colonial town of Greytown, where you can browse the main street taking in the craft and antique shops or stop for a coffee, before heading back over the hill to Wellington. • Duration: full day • Start time: 9.30am • Departs daily • Operates year-round • Group experience

Questions? Sorted.
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
