Therasia Resort Sea & Spa, Vulcano
Get away from it all
A hidden gem on the coast of the island of Vulcano with a relaxed, yet sophisticated style.
The incredible beauty of the resort results from its secluded natural setting far off the beaten track. Sitting between crystal clear waters and the slopes of Vulcanello – one of three volcanoes on the island – Therasia has an enviable position overlooking the sea stacks and other Aeolian Islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The hotel has been cleverly designed and built using locally sourced materials such as lava stone and cedar wood where possible, so it only adds to its unspoilt natural surroundings. The low-rise buildings feature arched picture windows that draw your eyes to each unique view, and the two infinity pools seemingly blend into the sea. The beautiful spa is an idyllic spot to retreat to following time out exploring Vulcano and the other islands, and you can even enjoy treatments exclusive to the region such as the Vulcano Black Sand Scrub. Although not renowned for its beaches, there are a handful of black-sand beaches that you can reach via shuttle, and the resort also has a sea platform which you can swim off.

Food & drink
Authentic Sicilian and Mediterranean cuisine is a particular focus here and, although you are in an out-of-the-way location, you certainly don’t have to forego luxuries such as fine dining. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the main restaurant L’Arcipelago where the cuisine is inspired by traditional Sicilian flavours. For a light poolside lunch, head to the casual restaurant I Grusoni, an open-air venue that's also open for dinner during the summer months.
The standout venue however, has to be the intimate Michelin-starred Il Cappero where six- to ten-course taster menus are served in a delightful setting overlooking the sea and island of Lipari. The innovative menu is also inspired by local cuisine and created using hand-picked seasonal produce.
Dining is a pleasure at Therasia Resort & Spa and there's a particular focus on traditional Sicilian and Mediterranean flavours as well as locally sourced produce. You can dine on fish caught in the waters surrounding the Aeolian Islands, cheese made in Syracuse and meat from animals reared in Sicily's Nebrodi Mountains.
L'Archipelago — is named for the breathtaking views it provides guests. You can enjoy breakfast and dinner with far-reaching views from the open-sided dining room or the spacious terrace. Dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant Il Cappero is a must for special occasions or serious foodies. Overlooking the sea stacks and island of Lipari, the region's stand-out venue has both a breathtaking setting and award-winning Sicilian cuisine. The restaurant's sommelier will be on hand to create the finest wine and food pairings. The resort's most casual restaurant, I Grusoni, is open for lunch (and sometimes dinner during the summer months) and is positioned overlooking the pool. The vegetarian restaurant, I Tenerumi, features locally grown and organic produce.
There are two bars here inlcuding the rustic I Russuri which is the perfect spot for sundowners and a light snack throughout the day. At the lounge bar Il Faraglione you can enjoy a relaxed pre- or post-dinner drink to the sounds of piano music.

Questions? Sorted.
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
