Kurumba Maldives
The original Maldives' resort
Niva Kurumba’s history and traditional style are evident throughout, but this compact village-like island also offers a host of more contemporary facilities. There’s always plenty going on here, from snorkelling and tennis to all manner of water sports. There are even arts and crafts activities if you fancy trying your hand at coconut painting and palm leaf folding. Come evening, there’s a complete programme of entertainment.
Kurumba was the very first Maldivian resort to open its ‘doors’, back in 1972. Its history and traditional style are evident but this compact village-like island also offers a host of more contemporary facilities.
The choice of dining is superb – there’s a restaurant for every night of the week with a poolside café to spare. And the quality is excellent. It begins with the main restaurant, Vihamanaa, which serves up buffet dishes from hearty salads to fiery curries. Of the six speciality restaurants, authentic recipes from northern and southern India are perfectly executed at Mahal, while Al Qasr (‘the Palace’) lives up to its name with decadent surrounds and delicious Middle Eastern flavours. And then there’s Thila, which extends out over the water – this is the gourmet breakfast venue for higher room types and a great spot for seafood dinners.
Snorkelling on the house reef is just steps from the beach and diving packages are available to pre-book.
In 1972, Niva Kurumba was just a collection of huts on a beach. In the years since it’s evolved into a large resort that offers good value luxury.

Food & drink
Choice is the name of the game here. And while the main buffet restaurant, Vihamanaa, is a great go-to for breakfast, this resort comes alive at dinnertime when your options multiply and Kurumba’s Arabic, Thai, and Indian restaurants tempt diners with delicious international flavours.
Take a deep breath – there’s a lot of choice here. The new-look Vihamanaa is the main restaurant with buffet style dining. Sample freshly baked bread, omelettes and fresh fruit at breakfast, while two live cooking stations serve up everything from Indian to Italian dishes at dinner.
Thila — is the contemporary breakfast venue for Beachfront Villas and above – start the day as you mean to go on with a glass of sparkling wine, crêpes and eggs any way. By night, indulge on gourmet seafood at the ocean's edge.
The Hamakaze is housed in an overwater pavilion and serves mouthwatering sushi, sashimi and sizzling teppanyaki. The Middle Eastern restaurant, Al Qasr (‘the Palace’), lives up to its name, with a stately setting and the finest mezze and grilled meats.
Authenticity is the order of the day at the glittering Mahal, serving thali and curries from the Royal Kitchens of India, and Khing Thai offers a blend of sweet and savoury flavours with aromatic spices that define traditional Thai cuisine.
For daytime dining – or if you can resist the temptations of the other restaurants and simply want a light bite in the evening – the Café is a relaxed al fresco venue by the pool. It also serves to-die-for ice-creams with traditional favourites as well as more creative flavours.
For drinks, head to the breezy Kandu Bar's overwater deck, the atmospheric Fez Lounge for mezze and flavoured shisha, or on-the-beach Athiri Bar.
Not all of the restaurants are open every day, so it’s worth checking in advance if you want to sample them all.
For poolside bites, Café will become a firm favourite. And don’t miss sundowners at Athiri, a classic beach bar in a prime spot.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
