Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge
Maasai-inspired, lake-view luxury
Take in the far-reaching views from this large lodge with rooms scattered throughout pretty grounds.
Standing high on a bluff overlooking the gleaming waters of Lake Manyara, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge has some of the best views around. Antelope and baboons roam the grounds, and the lodge offers easy access to the nearby national park. Thanks to a local community-run programme a whole host of activities are possible here, including mountain biking, forest walks, canoeing and even night game drives. The infinity pool is a focal point, with a pool bar encouraging you to soak up the views for longer. Inside the lodge buildings you’ll find vibrantly colourful frescos that depict the patterns of migratory birds, the swirling motifs of Maasai bomas and local landscapes. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style, with set menu options for dinner which is served in the dining room or on the terrace if you prefer.

An incredible way to kick off your Maldives holiday
“There's something pretty special about travelling by seaplane. The view from the sky is extraordinary - tiny specs of island and shades of blue that barely look real.”

The iconic, mile-long sandbank
Perfect for isolated sunbathing, dramatic photoshoots, and watching breathtaking Maldivian sunsets.

Snorkelling and diving isn't the only way to catch sight of the underwater world
“If snorkelling and diving isn't for you, it's possible to catch a glimpse of the reef from a glass-bottomed boat instead.”

Food & drink
The Flamingo restaurant has been built like a Maasai boma with a cathedral-like ceiling. Food is made with ingredients sourced from communities around the national park and after dinner, they hold Maasai dance and music performances on the terrace. For a special dining experience, you can book a bush breakfast or dinner, which will be set up on the edge of the escarpment, with a campfire and lake views.

Walking Tour of Local Village Mto wa Mbu
The walking tour usually lasts two hours and can be tailored to your interests. As you explore, you’ll see farmers on motorcycles transporting bunches of bananas and women carrying huge baskets of produce on their heads, chatting with their friends. You’ll pass the school and walk around the market, which is full of stalls selling vegetables and fruit. Along the way, you’ll get to talk to the traders selling their crafts, as well as food vendors who serve meals straight from a large pot. If you’re brave enough, you can even test the fiery, locally-brewed alcohol. Guests enjoy touring a nearby rice paddy and banana farm, where you’ll get to meet the farmers and learn how food is grown and harvested. Local people know that a fee is paid for the tour, which goes back into helping the community, so they’re very happy to have visitors.

Questions? Sorted.
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
