Grecotel LUXME White, LUX ME Resort
A blueprint for slow-paced living
Set on a sandy strip of Cretan coastline, this all-white, contemporary-design spot is an idyllic retreat for couples and families alike.
Grecotel reimagines the classic Greek sugar-cube architecture at White Palace, giving it an edgy, contemporary spin. A handful of sail-white buildings are dotted around a saltwater pool with sea views, connected by winding paths criss-crossing manicured gardens. Inside could pass for an art gallery, with light, open spaces and paper-bright walls. The Blue Flag beach is a 1,000 metre stretch of pebbles and sand, and there's one main pool as well as a kids' pool. Speaking of children, there's plenty to keep younger guests happy, and you'll also have access to the nearby Aqua Park, Kingdom of Poseidon, just in case the superb culinary offering, Agreco Farm visits, spa treatments and kids’ club activities aren’t enough to keep the whole brood entertained.

Why our experts like it
We've done the exploring, asked the locals, made the mistakes, and found the gems... so you don't have to start from scratch! These are the bits we think you'll love the most. Think of it as travel advice from a friend who just got back and can't wait to tell you everything.

If you love French cuisine, look no further than La Belle Vie

An incredible way to kick off your Maldives holiday
“There's something pretty special about travelling by seaplane. The view from the sky is extraordinary - tiny specs of island and shades of blue that barely look real.”

The iconic, mile-long sandbank
Perfect for isolated sunbathing, dramatic photoshoots, and watching breathtaking Maldivian sunsets.

Snorkelling and diving isn't the only way to catch sight of the underwater world
“If snorkelling and diving isn't for you, it's possible to catch a glimpse of the reef from a glass-bottomed boat instead.”

Kids club at Niva Kuramathi Maldives
Supervised activities through the day, so younger guests get their own adventure while you get a quiet hour by the water.

Food & drink
The resort is a foodie haven, with six restaurants rustling up everything from Cretan specialities and Greek favourites to Italian classics and Pan-Asian specialities. Throw in four drinking dens and you won’t be left wanting, particularly as many premium brand drinks are included as part of the LUXURY MADE EASY all-inclusive package. There are two wine cellars boasting 150 labels including bio and vegan wines. We love that you can also visit Grecotel's Agreco Farm, which is tucked among olive trees in the hills above the coastal town of Rethimno. Here you can dine at the Taverna, enjoying traditional Cretan dishes using produce grown and raised locally, with an early evening tour of the farm included as part of the experience.
With views of Rethymnon Old Town one way and sea panoramas the other, Ventanas Il Mar is a scenic restaurant with a buffet of Mediterranean-leaning dishes. Breakfast (pastries, cheeses, breads, fruits, fresh juices) is served on a large stone terrace planted with lilac-hued flowers, against a blue-on-blue backdrop.
The White — , dotted with oversized potted plants and curvaceous cream leather seats, serves a dégustation menu showcasing French flavours. A sommelier can give tips on food-and-drink pairings, drawing on a wide selection of bottles from the wine cellar. And the best seats in the house: those on the outdoor deck overlooking the Cretan Sea. Note this restaurant is for over-12s only.
A more casual option is Tavernaki, where diners share plates of mezze on a shaded waterfront terrace, dotted with rattan chairs. Nibble on warm-from-the-oven breads, dipped in golden olive oil, as you wait for aromatic plates of Greek cuisine – washed down with ouzo, of course.
Elsewhere, Asia White is a chilled hangout serving up Pan Asian cuisine to diners on an outdoor verandah, perched above the crashing waves. Later, linger over cocktails as a DJ spins soft dance music from their deck. Guest Restaurant (open 15 Jun-15 Sep) also draws on eastern culinary influences, pairing a mainly Lebanese a la carte menu with glorious sea views. This cool daytime haunt transforms into a buzzy late-night venue, with a young crowd gathering for shisha and cocktails.
With a prime poolside location, Fico d’India rustles up Italian favourites for hungry sun-seekers, but if you’re more of a grazer, light bites can be delivered straight to your lounger, from fresh baguettes to sizzling tortillas.
For sugar cravings, a pâtisserie-chocolaterie has a tempting selection of flaky pastries and sweet treats, while a beachfront crêperie-gelateria offers every filling and flavour under the sun (sip on a Greek frappé if you’re after a refreshing caffeine hit).
Four drinking dens are peppered throughout the resort, from a sunset lounge and wine bar to a barefoot beach haunt (be sure to try a cocktail mixed with Chios island speciality Mastixa) and garden theatre bar. The Wine Library contains a selection of wines that have been chosen by the Grecotel somelier and can be tasted during guided wine tastings.
For younger guests, there is a Petite Gastronomie programme with farm-to-table fruit and vegetables and baby food available in all restaurants.
We love The White for its exquisite tasting menu and beautiful design, with the best seats found on the outdoor deck.

Crete Snorkelling Experience
The Chania area is blessed with some of the island’s best beaches, and those warm, crystal-clear turquoise waters make this an excellent destination for a relaxed snorkelling adventure as well. Your day begins at a dive centre where you’ll be kitted out with a shortie wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel and given some handy tips on making the most of your time in the water. Then it’s time to hop on a speedy RHIB – as in rigid-hull inflatable boat – for a 20-or-so-minute zip across the waves to your first guided snorkelling session. With superb visibility, you have a good chance of seeing starfish, sponges, crabs and an array of fish, and maybe even glimpsing an octopus. After a reviving snack, you’ll be off to the second, equally breathtaking snorkelling site for the day, where you’ll have another opportunity to discover the marine life of the Mediterranean. • Duration: half day • Daily departures • Operates year round • Private experience Good to know — You’ll need to be able to swim, but otherwise the trip is suitable for all.

Among the many quaint villages that you’ll see en route is Giannoudi with its appealing Venetian-style architecture; Spili, whose famous lion-head fountain is fed by ice-cold water from mountain springs, and pretty Armeni, surrounded by olive, orange and avocado groves. Then there are the dramatic landscapes, from the wonderfully wild gorge of Prasses – home to rare vultures – and the equally ravishing gorge of Kourtaliotis to the picture-perfect beach at Preveli. Naturally, the day also includes a pause at a traditional tavern where you’ll have a chance to catch your breath over a lunch of Cretan cuisine at its most authentic and a glass or two of the local wine. • Duration: full day • Time: 9am to 5pm • Daily departures • Operates year round • Private experience

You’ll find traces of ancient Lappa in what is now the village of Argyroupolis, where you can enjoy lunch in one of the local taverns. Questions? Sorted.
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
