This is the holiday you shouldn’t miss in one of Sri Lanka’s most untouched places. Adventure, space and the possibility of watching elephants swimming.
This far-flung and off-grid escape, has the thrill of wildlife rather than Wi-Fi, and Monkey Mountain views instead of mobile signal. Get jammy on a boat safari\* and you’ll see elephants swimming island-to-island using their trunks as snorkels (animals like to do their own thing in their own time, so no guarantees). The experiences don’t stop there. There are cooking lessons\*, jungle drives\* and walks with Vedda tribes\*. Your safari-style bungalow, set in 20 acres of jungle and crafted from illuk grass, teak and mara wood, comes with a sitting room, outdoor shower and veranda. Best of all, the outdoor pool feels as wild and wonderful as your location on the fringes of Gal Oya National Park. The whole place is anchored by a main lodge where dinners involve freshly caught fish and farm-to-table treats. After sundowners in secret spots you crumple into a four-poster bed under a star-blanketed sky.

11 standalone eco-friendly bungalows including a two-bedroom family villa. Each is kitted out with indoor bathrooms and outdoor bamboo showers. Bedrooms feature four-poster beds and billowing mosquito nets whilst sitting rooms bring the outside in, alongside private verandahs to further connect you with nature. It’s worth noting that the paths leading to the bungalows from the main lodge are sometimes dusty and uneven.

Food & drink
Looking out to the swimming pool and onwards to Monkey Mountain, the main lodge hosts the bar and restaurant. It’s the place for cocktails, post-safari chats and a menu packed with local ingredients. Herbs are plucked straight from the hotel’s organic garden, eggs come from their free range chickens and fish is sourced from local fishermen.

Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
