Diamonds Athuruga
Chic, contemporary, and all-inclusive
Light and fresh, Diamonds Athuruga has a modern aesthetic and a beachy feel. It’s a stylish, all-inclusive resort in an enviable spot in the South Ari Atoll, where a house reef hosts colourful sea life, including angelfish and clownfish. It’s also one of the best places in the Maldives to spot manta rays, whale sharks, and turtles.
Observing the reef is one thing, but at Diamonds Athuruga you can also contribute to its protection. There's a team here that are actively encouraging new coral growth and working with the local community to teach them the skills needed to protect their underwater world through training, knowledge share and even scholarships. It's one of the projects we're supporting through The DERTOUR Foundation. Guests can get involved through guided dives, snorkelling trips and workshops led by marine biologists.
Light and contemporary, Diamonds Athuruga is one of the best maintained Maldives resorts, with regular improvements only enhancing its appeal. As well as the main buffet restaurant, Maakeyn, you’ll be able to choose between live show cooking at the Japanese restaurant, fresh seafood on the beach, and a traditional Maldivian open-air dining experience.
The waters surrounding the island teem with brightly coloured fish and other marine life. Superb snorkelling can be done straight from the island – from the boat jetty or via the cut-through by the overwater restaurant – and it’s worth booking one of the snorkelling trips to nearby thilas for the chance to spot manta rays or whale sharks. It takes a little longer to reach the best dive sites, but it’s recommended if you don’t mind the journey.
With classic Maldivian beaches and beautiful water villas, Athuruga is authentic yet cosmopolitan.

Food & drink
Maakeyn is the main restaurant, and your meals here are included on the All Inclusive board basis. Don’t miss dining at Thari or Thila – although these are not included, they offer a different style of dining.
The main restaurant for Beach Bungalow guests, Maakeyn offers buffet-style dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch might consist of pizza and pasta, or a barbecue grill where the catch of the day and a selection of meats are cooked to perfection. There’ll also be a choice of local dishes and themed dinners. The resort recommends that Water Villa guests book in advance to dine here.
The main dining venue for Water Villa guests is Thari, the overwater restaurant, which features a modern European and Asian fusion à la carte menu.
Thila — , the intimate Japanese restaurant, offers a live show cooking experience, where specialist chefs prepare fresh sushi and cook a selection of seafood and meats on the teppanyaki grill.
The Maldivian corner, Farivalhu, offers cultural dining, where guests are invited to share in a starlit dining experience under the palm trees on the beach. You’ll help prepare traditional Maldivian dishes which will then be served in the open by the Maldivian chefs.
For a romantic dinner on the beach, Kakuni offers freshly caught seafood and fresh lobster under the moonlight. There’s also Boli – a beach bar serving up light bites and tropical cocktails.
Maakeyn serves an ever-changing menu with the opportunity to try a diverse menu of international cuisine.
Maakeyn — With a prime position next to the beach, Maakeyn is the resort’s main restaurant. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet-style, there’s a different theme every night. Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
