Cinnamon Bentota Beach – Signature Selection
A beachside icon reborn
Cinnamon Bentota Beach – Signature Selection has been creating quite a stir on the hotel scene since it reopened following a two-year renovation. Occupying a sliver of land between golden sands and a mangrove-edged river, nestled among wild coconut groves, the rejuvenated beachfront retreat brings a slice of luxury to the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. Palm-strewn gardens wrap around a curvaceous swimming pool and tumble down to the beach below, where a toes-in-the-sand restaurant can be found.
Cinnamon Bentota Beach is creating quite the stir on the hotel scene after a huge renovation, the new-and-improved beachfront retreat brings a slice of luxury to the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. It occupies a sliver of land between golden sands and mangrove-edged river, nestled among wild coconut groves. Palm-strewn gardens wrap around a curvaceous swimming pool, and tumble down to the beach below, where a toes-in-the-sand bar can be found.
While much of the existing hotel (the famed Bentota Beach Hotel) has been completely rebuilt, one thing has stayed the same: the original lobby by famous architect Geoffrey Bawa. It is a space rooted in place: dark wood columns stretch up to a ceiling cloaked in a colourful patchwork of intricate batiks and hand-loomed textiles. Polished concrete floors and warm, earthy colours create a sense of a home-from-home – a nod to the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan life. Around this focal point unfurls the incredible design of the new spaces, from soaring grey columns and leaf-etched ceilings in the plant-filled restaurant, to elaborately patterned frosted glass and claret sofas in a lantern-lit lounge.
A makeover of a classic property has brought an increased level of luxury to the Bentota coastline.

Food & drink
There’s a beautifully designed all-day restaurant that turns into two specialist venues by night, plus a seafood eatery, pool bar and lounge bar to keep everyone happy.
The design of the restaurant at Cinnamon Bentota Beach is as enticing as the cuisine. Oversized potted plants and towering concrete columns reach up to a carved ceiling; a scattering of floor lanterns cast pools of light over the gleaming floors. Lime-toned chairs are arranged around wooden tables, which are flooded in natural light throughout the day from a wall of windows.
There’s a boldly decorated bar with a ceiling covered by a patchwork of painted blocks in red and orange tones – all the more striking against the acres of white stone. Matching dark red sofas entice guests to linger over drinks, while the long bar counter is edged by amber-hued chairs.
There’s something wonderfully decadent about watching an expert mixologist create your perfect cocktail at a bar you can swim up to.
Nossa — The all-day multi-cuisine restaurant offers an international buffet for breakfast and lunch, in the style of a Sri Lankan hawker street, before transforming in the evening into an Italian eatery, Ottimo, and Asian-themed Zest. Sea Meats Spice — The resort’s dinner-only seafood restaurant is the place to come for the catch of the day cooked exactly how you like. Drench — Order a cocktail from the swim-up pool bar or have drinks and snacks brought to your lounger by servers on bicycles. Fuze — Open until midnight, the resort’s stylish lounge bar serves up food and drinks during the day, with live music in the evening. Dining Experiences — Treat yourself to a special evening and choose to dine with the chef, or speak to the team about destination dining – enjoy a multi-course, fine dining menu with a personalised romantic setup alongside the Benthara River.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?
British passport holders are issued a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. You'll need a passport valid for the duration of your stay, a confirmed onward ticket and proof of your accommodation booking.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season, with the most reliable sunshine and calmest seas. May to October brings shorter rain showers, lower prices and better surf.
What currency is used in the Maldives, and do I need cash?
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars and take major cards. Most guests never need cash — a small amount is handy for tipping.
Is the Maldives good for honeymoons outside peak season?
Yes. Off-peak brings noticeably lower rates and quieter islands, and rain tends to come in short bursts rather than all day. Many resorts add honeymoon extras during these months.
What activities are there for older kids and teens in the Maldives?
Most resorts run watersports centres with windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus PADI dive courses from around age ten. Snorkelling safaris, sandbank trips and night fishing all suit older children.
