Atmospheric and authentic in gorgeous Garachico

Picturesque Garachico might not be as high profile as Tenerife’s other towns but therein lies its charm. This terracotta-hued 18th-century manor house is eye-candy for the design-minded with original features colliding with contemporary art and hip furnishings. The restaurant and pool take shelter in a dreamy courtyard where catch of the day is followed by homemade sorbets.

As you head north across Tenerife, the sun-baked south gives way to cool mountains and a rocky shoreline; barren vistas stark against their lush alter-egos. It's on the dramatic northern coastline that Garachico can be found, huddled at the foot of forested slopes. This underdeveloped corner of the island is rich in Canarian heritage, with well-preserved architecture, volcanic coves and lava-sculpted landscapes. The pretty town brims with tiny artisan shops, traditional bars and family-run restaurants, many concealed behind colourful façades.

Boutique Hotel San Roque can be found on a quiet street, just off the village’s Pueblo-style square, which buzzes with life after dark. Rooted in its surroundings, the terracotta-hued hotel has a strong sense of place. A cluster of Canarian-style buildings is arranged around the central courtyard, strewn with fanning palms and pale armchairs, and the outdoor pool, which is carved into volcanic rock. White-linen dining tables spill out from the restaurant and line the turquoise splash of water, illuminated by lamps at night. To one side, an outdoor terrace overlooks the ocean, to a soundtrack of waves lashing the rocks.
